What is the time it takes to walk a mile?

Typically, adults walk at 3-4 miles per hour which means that a mile can be walked in around 15 to 20 minutes. Different people may be more or less efficient than this. Walking speed can also be affected by age, gender, fitness level as well as gender.

Can you calculate walking speed?

If you're planning a trip or an outing or getting ready for the marathon or a sponsored walk it is possible to know how long you'll need to take to walk one mile. The individual's health could have an effect on the amount of time required to walk a mile (and other aspects like age, gender and speed) should also be taken into consideration in your planning.

It's not the awe-inspiring phenomenon where it takes three hours just to walk two blocks in one block with children. There are plenty of  how long does it take to walk a mile  and walls to be explored!

You may be shocked by the fact that youthful twenty-somethings actually tend to walk slower that their older thirty-something or forty-something peers. It's true. When we hit our 50s then our walking speed begins to slow again.

At just 2.1mph this would require an average 75-year-old about half an hour to walk a mile (28 minutes and 34 seconds) for a 23-year old, whereas a 75-year-old is expected to walk at a speed of 3mph, and it will take them just 20 minutes to walk a mile.

Speed of walking based on gender

In all age ranges men have a faster pace of walking than women. It could be that men are taller. They could also be more likely to delay something.

Walking according to your pace

When you're calculating the distance it takes to walk for a mile, there is another factor you should consider: Are you walking, strolling , or slogging through the streets. If you enjoy the air in the country it will mean that your pace is slow compared to when you're anxious about missing the train.

Here are some numbers to help you select the most appropriate pace:

Fast: 100 to 119 steps per minute / 11 minutes for every mile

Normal - between 80 and 99 steps every hour / 15 minutes each mile

Relaxed 60 to 79 steps per minute or 20 minutes per mile

Check out the miles chart below for an estimate of the time it takes to cover a distance at a normal, speed or at a relaxed pace.
